Forgetting one’s beauty

4/6/25

wazzzupp – i made it back for day 2. almost forgot until i was about to close my computer and read my book

So, I just watched this YT video called “The Hyper-Real Revolution: Why Real Experiences Are Becoming Obsolete – Rick Roderick” by the After Skool Channel (link). Glad I decided to click on that. Gave me even more motivation and desire to feed more on real life rather than simulated emotions and computer screens.

In the video, the After Skool artist brought the words of Rick Roderick (1949-2002) to life as he discussed the work of Jean Baudrillard (1929-2007), a French social theorist.

The first idea is super interesting – Rick Roderick’s “Self Under Siege” lecture series always presumed there was a self to begin with. But nowadays, the self has/will/could disappear, because social relations have begun to disappear due to technology – and reality itself has begun to disappear.

Kids don’t need to dream/create/go on adventures anymore, because it’s already created, dreamed, and adventured on the internet. People don’t need to be in awe of the real world, because you can awe at the internet.

Jean’s term: “the simulation has outrun reality” = “Hyper-real” = more real than real. The internet has enhanced and altered real life to where it’s not even recognizable (e.g. physical beauty, emotions, daily life in general)

We created a world to give us more and more leisure with this technology and innovation, but it seems like it’s taken more away than it’s given us.

“Where we see an image that reproduces us as inhuman, occasionally we see an image that has the bizarre transcendent power to make us slightly more human again.” – Rick Roderick

“We live in a world where there is more and more information, but less and less meaning.” – Jean Baudrillard

I don’t wanna forget the beauty of the world, of other people, of myself. I hope others don’t want to forget it either.

What I/we can do to not forget the beauty(?):

  • no scrolling unless actually searching for something (insta reels no)
  • subscribe to people/groups that give you knowledge, life, and beauty
  • spend my nights and meals with a other people, a community, books, something creative, or silence
  • go on more walks
  • call my family and friends more
  • talk to random people more
  • pay attention
